Backups

Updated by Typesense

You can have Typesense Cloud take scheduled backups of your cluster's data, and restore any of them into a new cluster (or back onto the same cluster) later.

Turning on backups

  1. Open your Cluster Dashboard and click on "Backups" in the left pane.

  2. Click on "Turn On Backups".

  3. Under "Back Up Every", pick 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours, and under "Starting At", the time of the first backup of the day (in UTC).

  4. Under "Keep Each Backup For", pick 7 days, 14 days or 30 days.

  5. Under "Store Copies In", pick 1 to 3 regions to store a copy of each backup in.

  6. Click on "Save Changes".

Backups need a payment method on your account.

If your cluster has a single node, writes pause while each backup is taken, usually for under a second.

Pricing

Backups are billed per GB-month of storage, per region you store them in, and show up on your invoices as "Backups". The Backups page shows the estimated monthly cost for your settings before you turn them on.

Restoring a backup

Click on "Restore" next to the backup you want. You can then:

  • "Restore to a new cluster": pick a region and optionally a name, click on "Review New Cluster", confirm the configuration and click on "Restore Now". The new cluster has the same RAM, CPU and GPU configuration as the original, with a new hostname. It starts as a single node, and you can turn on High Availability on it later as a configuration change.

  • "Restore onto <cluster name>": this replaces all the data in the current cluster with the backup. It's only available on single-node clusters, and the cluster can't serve searches or writes while the restore runs.

Monthly Restore Test

When you turn on "Monthly Restore Test", once a month we restore the latest backup into a temporary cluster in your account, check that it has the backup's collections and documents and then terminate it. You'll see the result under "Last restore test" on the Backups page. The temporary cluster is billed as regular node hours (usually about 1 hour a month, longer for large datasets).

You can also manage backups using the Cluster Management API.

When you terminate a cluster

You can choose to keep a cluster's backups when you terminate it, and restore them into a new cluster until they expire. Read more here.
